August Dig Deeper with Dr. Xiaobing Liu: An Introduction to GeoWISE Preliminary Design Tool

This seminar will introduce GeoWISE, a publicly accessible, web-based decision-support tool that streamlines the preliminary design and techno-economic evaluation of geothermal heat pump (GHP) systems and district geothermal heating and cooling networks. Using an automated workflow with minimal user inputs, GeoWISE integrates building data, rapid building energy model generation, GHP and ground heat exchanger (GHE) sizing, and cost and savings analysis to compare geothermal solutions against baseline HVAC systems. In the United States, users can start with a simple street address to identify existing buildings from a database of over 125 million records or define new construction by drawing a footprint and entering key properties. Beyond single-building applications, GeoWISE simulates district systems that connect multiple buildings via a shared water loop and centralized borehole field, enabling thermal energy sharing that can improve efficiency and reduce infrastructure requirements. GeoWISE also evaluates building retrofit measures (e.g., insulation, air sealing, window upgrades) alongside geothermal system design to reduce loads and optimize overall project economics, enabling rapid screening and planning of GHP solutions from individual buildings to campuses and communities.
