A recent paper by authors in Norway and China is A recent paper by authors in Norway and China is the first to show that a multi-source heat pump can be better than any conventional geothermal system since the ground loop size can be greatly reduced and the electricity use is low enough to give a lower total cost of ownership over 20 years. This paper used TRNSYS software to simulate a multi-family building in Oslo, Norway over a 20 year time. Considering five different multi-source configurations using various air source and solar thermal elements, the best of these configurations was found to be a combination of a dry cooler along with a conventional borehole heat exchange array. The most significant findings from this paper will be described along with some possible improved configurations that will be useful for all climates and ranges of size, including very large scale thermal energy networks.
